10 Days in China: Beijing, Xi'an & Shanghai First Timer's Complete Itinerary
10 Days in China Itinerary
If you're visiting China for the first time, the classic Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai route is the perfect introduction. These three cities together tell the full story of China — its imperial past, ancient civilization, and modern ambition. Ten days is the ideal amount of time to experience all three without feeling rushed, and with the right planning, this trip will be one of the most memorable journeys of your life.
Overview: Your 10-Day Route
Days 1–3: Beijing Days 4–5: Xi'an Days 6–8: Shanghai Days 9–10: Day trips or leisure
Travel between cities is seamless on China's high-speed rail network. Beijing to Xi'an takes around 4.5 hours, and Xi'an to Shanghai takes approximately 6 hours — both comfortable, affordable, and scenic.
Days 1–3: Beijing
Beijing is China's capital and one of the most historically rich cities on earth. Three days gives you enough time to cover the essential highlights without rushing.
Day 1 — The Heart of Imperial China: Start your trip at Tiananmen Square, the world's largest public square and the symbolic center of the country. Walk directly through to the Forbidden City, the magnificent imperial palace complex that served as home to 24 emperors over nearly 500 years. Spend at least three hours exploring its countless halls, courtyards, and treasures. In the evening, head to the Wangfujing street area for dinner and a first taste of Beijing street food.
Day 2 — The Great Wall: No trip to China is complete without visiting the Great Wall, and the Mutianyu section is the best choice for most visitors — well-preserved, less crowded than Badaling, and surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Return to Beijing in the afternoon and visit the Temple of Heaven, where emperors once performed annual ceremonies to pray for good harvests.
Day 3 — Hutongs & Local Life: Spend your final Beijing day exploring the city's ancient hutong neighborhoods around Nanluoguxiang and Drum Tower. These narrow alleyways are where old Beijing still lives and breathes. In the afternoon, visit the Summer Palace, a breathtaking imperial garden and lake complex on the city's outskirts.
Days 4–5: Xi'an
Take the morning high-speed train to Xi'an, arriving early afternoon. Xi'an is one of the oldest cities in China and served as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road.
Day 4 — Terracotta Warriors: Head straight to the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors, one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Over 8,000 life-size clay soldiers, horses, and chariots were buried here to guard the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. The scale and detail are genuinely awe-inspiring. In the evening, walk along the top of Xi'an's ancient city walls at sunset — one of the most magical experiences in China.
Day 5 — Muslim Quarter & Local Flavors: Spend the morning exploring the Xi'an Muslim Quarter, a vibrant maze of street food stalls, mosques, and local shops that has existed here for over a thousand years. Try the famous rou jia mo (Chinese burger), yangrou paomo (lamb bread soup), and fresh pomegranate juice. In the afternoon, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a Tang Dynasty landmark with a beautiful surrounding park.
Days 6–8: Shanghai
Take the high-speed train to Shanghai and enter a completely different world. Shanghai is China's most cosmopolitan city — a dazzling mix of futuristic skyline, colonial-era architecture, and vibrant food and arts scenes.
Day 6 — The Bund & Pudong Skyline: Arrive in Shanghai and check in before heading to the Bund, Shanghai's famous waterfront promenade. The contrast between the European-style buildings on one side and the futuristic Pudong skyline on the other is unlike anything else in the world. Take the ferry across the Huangpu River to Pudong and visit the observation deck of the Shanghai Tower for panoramic city views.
Day 7 — French Concession & Local Culture: Spend the day exploring the French Concession neighborhood, one of Shanghai's most charming areas. Tree-lined streets, independent cafes, boutique shops, and beautifully preserved Art Deco buildings make this a wonderful place to walk and explore. Visit Xintiandi for lunch and the nearby Shikumen Open House Museum to understand Shanghai's unique architectural and cultural heritage.
Day 8 — Yu Garden & Old Shanghai: Explore the classical Chinese gardens of Yu Garden in the morning, then browse the surrounding Old City bazaar. In the afternoon, visit the Shanghai Museum for an outstanding collection of ancient Chinese art, ceramics, and bronzes.
Days 9–10: Day Trips or Leisure
Use your final two days to explore beyond Shanghai. Suzhou, just 30 minutes by high-speed train, is famous for its classical gardens and silk production — a UNESCO World Heritage-listed treasure. Hangzhou, about an hour away, offers the legendary West Lake, one of China's most celebrated natural landscapes. Alternatively, spend these days shopping, eating, and soaking up more of Shanghai's incredible food scene.
Practical Tips for Your 10-Day China Trip
The best time to do this trip is spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) when the weather is most comfortable. Book high-speed train tickets in advance, especially during national holidays. Download WeChat and either Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive — they are essential for daily life in China. Carry some cash as a backup, as a small number of vendors do not accept mobile payments.
